Spark plugs are something related to automobiles that everyone and their dog has heard of. But, do you REALLY know the specifics behind spark plugs and what spark plugs do? Well, worry no more because we at
Superior Synthetics LLC in Clintonville have you covered.
What Exactly Does a Spark Plug Do?
Even though the spark plug is a fairly simple device, it is tasked with two different but critical jobs. Its first job is to create an artificial bolt of lightning within the cylinder head of the engine. This little bolt of lightning is the spark that lights the fire within the combustion chamber. This little fire creates a mini explosion that causes the pistons in the engine to move. The moving of the pistons allows your car engine to transfer power from the engine to the crank shaft which in turn spins, causing your vehicle to move forwards or backwards.
The spark plugs' second job is to transfer heat away from the combustion chamber. The spark plug does this by pulling unwanted thermal energy away from the combustion chamber; it then transfers that heat to the engine's cooling system. The spark plugs work in unison with the pistons which push out the hot air in the form of exhaust.

What Happens Between the Spark Plug and the Engine?
In short, this is what happens: The spark plug is located at the top of the cylinder head. The piston travels down the cylinder first, drawing in a mixture of air and fuel. After it has drawn in a mixture of air and fuel, the piston goes back up toward the spark plug, squishing or compressing the mixture. When the piston is at its fullest reach or TDC (top dead center), the spark plug ignites the mixture, forcing the piston back down to create power for the vehicle. It is then pushed back up again to clear out any exhaust fumes. Then the process begins all over again.
A six-cylinder car will have six spark plugs, a four-cylinder car will have for and so on. The only exception to this rule is that some engines (such as the HEMI) will have two spark plugs per cylinder.
Now that we've gone over the basics, let's take a look at finding out the spark plug socket size.
Finding out the Spark Plug Socket Size
Almost all of the spark plug sockets in existence feature a six-sided (hex) head which will allow you to get a wrench on the socket when the plugs are not easily accessible. Inside the spark plugs, there is also a piece of rubber that is used to protect the insulator of the sparks; you can grip this piece of rubber to pull them out of their socket when needed. In order to determine what size spark plug that you need, measure the size of the socket, rubber and wrench used to pull it out so you know what you will need to buy. If you're still a little bit confused about the sizing, don't worry because you can always bring in the spark plug to your nearest auto store and show it to a salesperson who will then show you the type and size of spark plug socket you need. Also, another important thing to remember is that most car models made from 1965 up until 1999 used the 13/16" socket.
